Royal Mail Delivery Office, Worthing

The Project

Situated on a corner plot the main post office in Chapel Street in the seaside town of
Worthing, West Sussex is a 1930s built three storey neo-Georgian building. To the rear,
the numerous levels of existing mastic asphalt flat roofs had reached the end of their
natural lifespan, and over the years water ingress had become commonplace in various
locations around the site.

Richard Soan Roofing Services had been tasked with refurbishing the roofs. Since the
sorting office remained in operation throughout the contract, access to the numerous
different roof areas was difficult, and along with the various refurbishment works being
carried out by main contractor Quoin Contracts Limited, health and safety played an
even more vital factor than usual.

Although the existing waterproofing had reached the end of its life it was in a suitable
condition for overlaying, which proved valuable with the post office remaining fully
operational throughout. The existing solar reflective chippings, paint surfaces and debris
were all cleared off the roof and the surfaces primed ready to receive the new
waterproofing. Richard Soan chose the Profiles system incorporating the Profiles
Vapour-Vent XL vapour control layer, Thermazone Torch-on insulation and finished with
the Profiles Vent-XL underlay and Profiles XL capsheet.

The level of workmanship and attention to detail was very high and the project was
completed on time following the four month long contract.
