The Role

BMI is looking to appoint a Legal Counsel Benelux to work as part of the Group Legal Function.

Reporting to the Senior Legal Counsel South West Europe, the role will be based in Montfoort, Netherlands.

In this role you will have primary responsibility for the Benelux business and be part of the Benelux Senior Leadership Team (supporting Netherlands & Belgium businesses & manufacturing sites). In addition, You will also collaborate closely with colleagues in the Group Legal team, who are based in the UK, Germany, France, Poland, Italy, Sweden and US. You will be the first & primary legal business partner on all key legal issues and strategic projects ranging from, but not limited to:

  • Commercial strategy and contracting (primarily sale & supply agreements) and providing commercially focused legal advice in the region on a wide range of commercial agreements;

  • Supporting & ensuring compliance with Marketing claims & Sustainability strategy, including related reporting obligations;

  • Pre & post dispute claims work. Working with the wider legal team and external counsel to seek out and propose appropriate solutions and resolutions to disputes and managing litigation;

  • Compliance advice & training, working with the wider legal team to implement policies, advise & train internal client groups on Company guidelines, policies and procedures including competition law, data protection, anti-bribery and corruption;

  • Providing general legal advice in respect of corporate and commercial law, real estate, labor & employment, intellectual property;

  • Support & influence the strategic agenda of the BMI Group and Group Legal on potential restructurings, acquisitions or divestitures;

  • Instruction & close management of external counsel.


Candidate Profile

The appointee will proactively identify issues & offer solutions. You will be expected to be accessible, motivational and credible to the Benelux Leadership Team, others in the legal team, senior management and all colleagues. The appointee will also bring:

  • Master’s degree law & qualified in the Netherlands with a minimum of 5 to 8 years of post-qualified experience;

  • Strong grounding from the corporate or commercial team of a reputable leading law firm or a strong in-house experience covering a broad range of legal issues including commercial contracts with strong drafting, negotiation & communication skills (both written & verbal) in an international company (ideally in a building material or within the private sector industry);

  • Ability to operate in a fast paced and dynamic environment and experience with working in an English speaking and multinational business environment;

  • Strong organization & prioritization skills with ability to ensure that all legal advice is provided proactively and within relevant deadlines;

  • A consistently high level of legal analysis and attention to detail with good common sense, sound commercial & ethical judgment;

  • Business focus and a balanced approach to risks analysis in the context of the business;

  • Ability to work independently as a self-starter with low levels of supervision, manage multiple matters with commercial awareness, and focus on providing practical solutions;

  • Curious, with a good attitude & interpersonal skills, coupled with a willingness to learn and an ability to interact effectively with business partners, colleagues, advisers and other parties, build strong relationships and influence key stakeholders;

  • Fluent business English and Dutch required & excellent legal drafting skills - French would be a plus but is not mandatory.
