Since it was formed in the 1990s, the Intelligent Membrane Association (IMA) has championed the highest standards in flat roofing in the UK. This year, at an awards ceremony, the IMA’s flat roofing projects were celebrated, with categories covering everything from the specifics of flat roofing applications through to installation successes.
The IMA projects nominated in this year’s IMA Awards reflected both the scale and excellence of work that is taking place to transform roofscapes in towns and cities across the UK.
Alongside celebrating individual projects, the awards also touched on our milestone achievement of 100 years of manufacturing in Manchester. To mark the occasion, the additional awards were added to this year’s roster, including ‘Excellence in Refurbishment’, ‘Excellence in New Build Roofing’, and ‘Excellence in Workmanship’.
Congratulations to each of our winners – and to those who were nominated in their respective categories. This year’s shortlist made the judges’ job extremely tough, with high standards across the board.
The re-roofing of the Halliday Court care home in Leeds wasn’t without its challenges – all of which were expertly overcome by Tucker & Tunstalls Ltd to deliver the project on budget and two weeks ahead of schedule.
The 2,250sqm roof was prone to leaks, with several skylights and soil vent pipes needing to be navigated. Throughout the project, the site remained fully operational, requiring the team to maintain a safe and comfortable environment with minimal impact on residents.
Overcoming these challenges, Tucker & Tunstalls used our Thermaweld Firesmart system, carrying out the work to an extremely high standard.
Recognised as Highly Commended, Salnor Roofing Services Ltd completed the re-roofing at Nine Mile Ride Primary School. At 1,100sqm, the project included some intricate detailing and a flame-free solution, with the team rising to the challenge and delivering the project with minimal disruption to the school.
Expectations were high for Mac Roofing’s project at the Salvation Army headquarters, with the client set on achieving a BREEAM Excellent rating.
Located in London, the project threw up some interesting challenges for the team, from the logistics of getting materials to and from site within the constraints of local ‘red routes’, through to the onset of Covid-19 – which delayed the project by 12 months.
The team overcame every challenge encountered on the project, using Parabit Solo Hot Melt to deliver a first-class system and navigate the intricacies of a large atrium – a task that involved more than 60 plinths!
With work taking place during the winter, and a building that was not only locked by public highways and the River Thames but also has a composite layout of roofs, RTL’s roofing skills were really put to the test.
The difficult-to-access site meant that the existing roof had received little maintenance since the building’s construction, leaving it prone to water ingress. The roof refurbishment was completed to a high standard, even implementing safe access measures to support future maintenance. But the good work didn’t stop there.
By utilising Noxite, the new roof adds to the building’s sustainability by actively transforming harmful nitrogen oxides from the immediate environment into harmless nitrates.
RTL also received the Highly Commended award in the Eco Active Roofing category for their work at the John Lewis distribution facility in Killingworth.
MAC Roofing's team clinched the Large-Scale Roofing Award for the second consecutive year, marking this their second achievement of the day.
On this major re-roof project spanning 13,000sqm, many challenges were overcome, while set performance, sustainability and FM Global Certification criteria were met.
Tackling issues such as removing excess materials, stripping various roof areas, and addressing large holes and standing roof water showcased their skill and dedication.
The team's flexible and efficient project management approach, including daily meetings and weekend work, also minimised disruption on the live site.
This award recognises a team who were required to work in a high risk environment to perform a very challenging installation at John Lewis & Partners in Kingston upon Thames.
Working in close proximity to the building’s perimeter where edge protection could not be erected, meant that the team had to be attached to physical restraints - a perfect example of just one of the various measures that RTL took to ensure their operatives and members of the public were kept safe at all times.
Their dedication to completing these refurbishment works to an excellent standard while making safety a top priority reflects why RTL Group was selected as the winner of the Installation Team of the Year 2023.
Alongside the core categories of the IMA Awards, this year’s proceedings also marked a significant milestone for us, celebrating 100 years of manufacturing in Manchester. In recognition, three additional awards categories were included.
Excellence in Refurbishment – Midland Roofing (Derby) Ltd and NRA Roofing & Flooring Services Ltd
The Excellence in Refurbishment award was split between two contractors and their projects, with the execution and appearance of both projects being testament to both recipients.
Midland Roofing (Derby) Ltd received this award for the Glenmere Primary School project, and NRA Roofing & Flooring Services Ltd were recognised for their work at St Peter and St Paul CE Academy.
The multi-faceted nature of both projects made the application of the new waterproofing systems very difficult. All pitched structure sections taper towards the centre, which requires careful cutting, forming, and setting out of all membranes. The projects involved four separate roof areas, with two regions having numerous pitched sections that were very distinct in appearance.
Congratulations to MAC Roofing for their outstanding work at Wales' first science park, M-Sparc.
This development features our bituminous and single-ply waterproofing solutions, which contribute to the visually striking structure, featuring white Corian cladding and a white single-ply membrane.
MAC Roofing's expertise in warm roof waterproofing, including a distinctive sloping roof, contributed to the facility achieving a BREEAM Excellent Standard and meeting sustainability goals. Their crucial role in delivering the project on time and within budget delighted the University.
In recognition of this highly challenging project, Itech Roofworks is a worthy winner of this unique award for excellence in roofing.
Managing site debris was critical to avoid fines, and night-time working was introduced due to extreme surface temperatures. Even during a ‘baggage handling crisis’ at Heathrow Airport, Itech Roofworks' operatives halted roof work to assist without extending the completion deadline. Their efforts deserve recognition for outstanding performance under challenging circumstances.
Our thanks go to everyone who nominated projects in this year’s IMA Awards. And, many congratulations to all the winners and those recognised as highly commended for their quality workmanship and excellence in flat roofing.
