The Project

Set in the heart of Manchester, Chorlton Health Centre provides a valuable service to the local community. In order to deliver the highest levels of care and support, it’s important the building remained fit for purpose – making its upkeep vital. When water ingress indicated problems with the performance of the existing roof, which spans across eight separate areas, a full roof refurbishment was undertaken. This unlocked the potential to underpin long-term performance alongside making a positive impact on the environment.

  • Contractor:  K Pendlebury & Sons

  • System: Noxite

The Challenge

The Challenge

Standing water on areas of the existing flat roof of the health centre was the core challenge facing the experienced roofing team from K Pendlebury & Sons. Significant volumes of pooling water had put strain on the roof, leading to accelerated deterioration and the presence of water ingress. This highlighted an issue with drainage of the existing roof, something the team needed to correct through the design of a new flat roof system including a tapered insulation design.

As an NHS health centre serving one of the UK’s busiest cities, the roofing contractors had to navigate the complexities of working on a live site, with Chorlton Health Centre remaining fully operational throughout the project. This meant taking additional care to prioritise visitor safety and reduce disruption on site

Forming part of the NHS estate, the re-roofing works needed to prioritise performance as well as provide a more sustainable roofing solution. This required a system to be devised which overcame existing challenges and futureproofed the roof.

Chorlton Health Centre - The Solution

To ensure the long-term performance of the new flat roof, a tapered insulation scheme was central to the design, while the installation of Noxite and a green roof system elevated the building’s environmental credentials. The bespoke tapered insulation scheme improved the performance of the roof by creating an adequate fall in the flat roof to promote effective drainage.

Elevating sustainability, in line with the NHS Estates Department’s ambitions, the addition of a Noxite membrane from Icopal transformed the flat roof for Chorlton Health Centre. Utilising the sun, wind and rain, an additive within the Noxite material depollutes the surrounding air by absorbing nitrogen oxide and converting it into nitrates which are washed away by rain.

A green roof was also installed, delivering both environmental and aesthetic benefits. In this area of the roof, Rootbar Capsheets were installed to deliver effective performance and support the green roof.

The Impact

The Impact

Taking a considered approach to the management of the project, K Pendlebury & Sons were able to deliver a successful flat roof refurbishment at Chorlton Health Centre, ensuring long-term reliability and performance alongside sustainability benefits. In practice, this contributes to an environment that prioritises visitors, benefits the local community and enhances the positive impact of buildings within the NHS estate.

A collaborative approach between the contractor team and Icopal unlocked the full potential of the health centre’s roof, maximising the value of the project for all stakeholders. This includes the long-term performance of the roof which is underpinned by a bespoke tapered insulation design, alongside the environmental and aesthetic benefits of Noxite and green roof areas.
