The college’s original roof, covered in faded fibre cement slates was completely removed alongside a number of sections of the roof structure which had been badly damaged. Cambrian Slate was selected by the main contractor Banyan Construction to match the Cambrians used on previous reroofing jobs on the college grounds. Specified to match Ullenwood Manor, an 1840’s manor finished with a traditional natural Welsh slate, Cambrian was the obvious choice. The Redland slate has also been used on several other of the college’s renovation projects throughout the years. Cambrian, which is designed to weather like natural slate has proved it can stand the test of time on the National Star College roofs.
Specialist roofing contractors Leigh Smith Roofing faced several challenges during the reroofing. Provided with a short, sixweek window of opportunity to complete the job, contractors sought the assistance of the Redland SpecMaster specification, and guarantee service to ensure quality and security. The specification also included Redland Rapid Vented Ridge and Dry Hip, Dry Valley, Redland Spirtech 400 2S vapour permeable underlay and Redland RedVent 25 Over-Fascia Vent.
“There was a significant amount of structural damage to the roof caused by the badly performing fibre cement slates so we were looking for a solution that would be secure for the future of the building, we got that with Cambrian,” Leigh said.
